After months of delay, progress is being made on a major seismic retrofit of San Francisco's Bay Bridge. It has taken six years to demolish and rebuild the approach to the bridge from the west side, and the framework for the bypass is in place on the east side. Eventually, there will be a dramatic aerial event in which a "connecting piece of the bypass will be lifted into the air, set atop rails and rolled into place" -- something several cable TV channels hope to film. In the end, the $6.3 billion retrofit will yield a single 525-foot-high tower suspension bridge.
