Chevron is seeking dismissal of a $27 billion damages claim filed by groups in Ecuador over the release of contaminated water dating back to 1972, prior to Chevron's purchase of Texaco. Chevron maintains it was released from liability after paying $40 million for cleanup in the 1990s, and it charges that state-owned Petroecuador was responsible for a large part of the pollution.
