ExCeL London, a dock that serves as a partial flood relief device for the Thames River, will expand to accommodate several sports for the 2012 Olympics. Equipment used for the project includes heavy-duty barges and movable gates to secure permanent pile casings before they are put into position. "From the offset, it was understood that the project would have its challenging elements, in particular piling from the barges into water," noted project manager Ben Hardy.
