In an effort to cut costs and improve customer service, Delta Air Lines says it will consolidate the operations of its three company-owned feeder airlines under a new division based in Minneapolis. Baggage handlers and gate agents for Comair, Mesaba and Compass will be among the 4,100 employees shifted to the new Regional Handling Services unit. "When fully operational in the third quarter of 2009, RHS will be an industry leader serving as one of the nation's largest regional ground handling operators," said Don Bornhorst, senior vice president of Delta Connection, in a memo to employees. Bornhorst said the move would not result in any involuntary layoffs, though the overall workforce may be shrunk through attrition and voluntary retirements.
