A well-toned chief executive officer physique still signals business prowess, but now executives are expected to work out on their own time. "It used to be perfectly acceptable for senior people to leave the office for a 90-minute guided workout at their private gym and, in fact, their dedication to health and fitness was often applauded by colleagues," private trainer Graeme Marsh says. Now his clients are spending more time at their desks. Still, he says the business hierarchy creates a need even the recession can't kill. "If you are a managing director or senior partner, you don't want your receptionist or your PA to end up on the adjacent treadmill while you huff and puff and generally display your unfit body," he says.
