Utilities in central Florida have proposed a water grid that would span close to 500 miles, cross nine counties and tap water from undeveloped ocean and river sources. Officials say the water pipeline system would help the state meet its growing need for drinkable water, at a projected cost of more than $1.8 billion. Meanwhile, environmental advocates have raised concerns that the project could compromise the state's rivers, lakes and wildlife by encouraging new residential developments.
