TSA's 1,200 inspectors -- behind-the-scenes employees who test for vulnerabilities in the security system -- spend two-thirds of their time on duties other than inspecting, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office. "It should be alarming to passengers because, no -- we do not have security any better than we did on the morning of 9/11, and GAO reports have repeated that time and again," says aviation consultant Mike Boyd. TSA officials respond that big events like political conventions can distract inspectors from their core aviation duties, but, nevertheless, "TSA welcomes suggestions of the GAO to improve this important program."
