Lactose intolerance is caused when the body doesn't produce enough of the enzyme lactase to break down the sugar in milk and dairy products. Dr. Rallie McAllister says lactase production is largely influenced by genetics. People who are lactose intolerant can try taking supplemental lactase, eating or drinking dairy products in small amounts, or purchasing products that are lactose-free, she says.
