To be "green," a roof needs more than green on top of it. Contractors can use LEED certification guidelines -- which gauge energy and water efficiency, material usage, innovation of design and sustainability -- to ensure that their roofs meet "green" standards. Benefits of becoming LEED certified include lower operating costs, higher resale value and access to tax incentives and grant money.
