Bills proposing to ban plastic bags or impose a fee to use them have gained momentum across the U.S., but economic and other factors have kept them from becoming a reality, especially as the country has entered a recession. No state has passed a fee or ban, despite strong pushes in several areas.
Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets are highlighting their sustainable-seafood offerings during Lent, when many consumers give up meat. The two chains will provide seafood-based recipes, in-store brochures and signs at seafood counters.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has approved mandatory country-of-origin labeling rules, which will go into effect March 16. He also called for industry stakeholders to voluntarily provide additional label information -- for example, showing whether an animal was born in one country and slaughtered in another.
