Bills proposing to ban plastic bags or impose a fee to use them have gained momentum across the U.S., but economic and other factors have kept them from becoming a reality, especially as the country has entered a recession. No state has passed a fee or ban, despite strong pushes in several areas.
Tesco underestimated the importance that Americans place on price and should have competed better on promotions, said Tim Mason, head of the company's U.S. business. Tesco might make changes to its Fresh & Easy stores.
Nordstrom plans to open 13 stores this year, and 10 of them will be its discount store, Rack. The company's president said the department store also is offering more rewards to loyal customers. "Our focus, for the last several years, has really been try to leverage the kind of brands that customers would expect to see in a full-line store and offer it at a discounted environment," a Nordstrom executive said.
OSI Restaurant Partners is revamping its Outback Steakhouse restaurants by updating the interiors and making changes to the chain's menu. The new look will use bolder colors and include smaller dining rooms and fewer of the chain's trademark Australian artifacts.
