U.S. researchers working on genetically engineered mice discovered that a protein called Nkx2-5 activates a certain gene that determines how a group of cells evolve in a developing embryo. They hope to learn how the cells develop and how the gene can be altered to stimulate blood vessel development. "This gene discovery provides the key to unlocking the secret of how blood vessels grow," the lead researcher said.
