A U.S. study found that an injection of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor helped boost the memory and cognitive function of laboratory animals that were older, were genetically engineered to exhibit symptoms similar to Alzheimer's disease or had damage in the entorhinal cortex. The protein, which is naturally produced by the brain, also prevented the death and degeneration of cells, researchers said.
