There will be a shortage of orthopedic surgeons to perform hip- and knee-replacement surgeries by 2016, as fewer doctors are available to replace those who are retiring, according to a study presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' annual meeting. The study found that the number of people who will need joint replacements but won't have access to the procedure could reach nearly 1 million by 2016.
