U.S. scientists developed a bioengineered version of a bacteriophage, a type of virus that can infect bacteria, that they said could prevent bacteria from becoming tolerant to antibiotics. It also might kill drug-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The genetically altered virus works by attacking the defense systems bacteria use when exposed to antibiotics.
