American Airlines says the MD-80 forced to make an emergency landing on Wednesday had received all proper maintenance and appeared to be operating normally. "There was nothing in our previous maintenance checks to indicate any issue that could be related or connected to the failure of this engine," said company spokesman Tim Smith. Officials suspect an unknown object may have been sucked into the Pratt & Whitney engine, causing pieces to break off shortly after takeoff from New York LaGuardia.
