U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is studying several programs aimed at improving student achievement -- among them a plan to lengthen the school year in order to make American students more competitive with their peers overseas. "It doesn't matter how poor, how tough the family background, socioeconomic challenges," Duncan said. "Where students have longer days, longer weeks, longer years -- that's making a difference."
