In what could be a last-ditch effort to avoid bankruptcy, the troubled mall REIT General Growth Properties will today formally request that the owners of $2.3 billion of its bonds give the company more time to pay principal and interest, The Wall Street Journal reported. In what is called a consent solicitation, the REIT will ask, in essence, that the owners of the bonds refrain from demanding payment.
