Avionics in the Wright brothers' day consisted of a stopwatch, an anemometer and a tachometer -- a far cry from later aircraft, where engineers managed to "cover every available inch of cockpit real estate with some type of instrument, button or switch." But scanning dozens of gauges was inefficient, so "steam" gauges eventually gave way to the all-glass cockpit.
