The crew of American Airlines Flight 309 reported an engine failure shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia on Wednesday. Metal shards were ejected from the back of the No. 2 engine, but none hit the fuselage of the MD-80 aircraft, and no one on the ground was injured. The plane landed without incident at JFK. "Our crews are trained to handle situations such as these and our pilots did a fantastic job in landing the aircraft safely," said a spokesperson for American.
