Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday that splitting the contract for a new aerial refueling tanker would be "bad public policy." Several key lawmakers have urged Boeing Co. and Northrop Grumman Corp. to share the lucrative contract, but Gates said that would drive up the overall cost due to maintenance and logistical issues. "I think it's a bad deal for taxpayers," he said.
