Beset by sharp downturns in both business and commercial aviation, Pratt & Whitney is relying on the military market to ride out the recession. "This business is busy and continues to grow," says Tom Farmer, the head of Pratt's military division. President Dave Hess says federal interventions will break the financing logjam "sooner or later," but in the meantime, commercial production is expected to drop by 15% to 25%, while major business jet customers such as Cessna have seen sales plunge 30%.
