Radiation exposure from diagnostic scans, including CT and nuclear medicine scans, in the U.S. increased significantly in 2006 compared with the early 1980s, suggesting that doctors are ordering more unnecessary tests, according to a report from the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements. The report said almost half of the radiation exposure among the population in 2006 was from medical-imaging procedures.
