State officials in Hawaii are recommending an overhaul in teacher licensing that includes dismantling the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board, turning control over to the state's Board of Education and adopting teaching standards similar to those of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Under a pilot program that began last year, teachers can show they are knowledgeable about their profession in a variety of ways, including by earning National Board Certification.
