The number of workers drawing unemployment benefits reached a record 5.3 million last month, while retail sales posted a modest decline, less than what economists expected. While the small drop in consumer spending suggests "the worst declines appear to be behind us," it would be "premature to conclude that the consumer is on the way back," said Nigel Gault, chief economist at IHS Global Insight.
