Clint Smith started Emma, a do-it-yourself electronic marketing company, in 2001 just after the dot-com bust. Venture capital was hard to come by, so Smith and co-founder Will Weaver opted for a line of credit, taking out just enough to fund their startup until the cash started rolling in.
