The Department of Energy will use $6 billion of economic-stimulus funds to speed up environmental cleanup work at former nuclear-weapons sites in 12 states. The Hanford site in Washington state and the Savannah River site in South Carolina will be the two largest recipients of the funds dedicated to cleanup work. Meanwhile, the agency will also spend $3.2 billion in stimulus funds on an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program to fund the installation of renewable energy systems on state and local government buildings.
