Google CEO Eric Schmidt, in a speech at the yearly Newspaper Association of America meeting, touted the importance of newspapers and urged executives to develop new editions that would work on the Web, mobile phones and other platforms. The issue of "fair use" of newspaper content by Google and other search engines came up briefly but reportedly didn't generate any controversy. The Associated Press has said it would compel search engines to license content and give it and member newspapers a share of ad sales.
