Just Born's Peeps brand has introduced a holiday lineup that includes a new variety, a caramel chick coated in milk or dark chocolate. Also offered for the holidays are marshmallows shaped as snowmen and trees, peppermint-flavored stars, and marshmallow reindeer in a chocolate mousse flavor.
Just Born's Peeps brand is introducing Peepsters and chocolate-dipped Peeps for Easter. Peepsters are individually wrapped bite-sized candies in milk chocolate or dark chocolate, and dipped Peeps feature either milk chocolate or dark chocolate at the bottom of each marshmallow chick.
With childhood obesity on the rise, some parents are forsaking the chocolate bunnies, jelly beans and other sweets associated with Easter. NCA spokeswoman Susan Smith said sweets are a childhood tradition, adding, "What's Easter without a chocolate bunny or a Peep?"
Patrick De Maeseneire, chief executive of Barry Callebaut, will leave the chocolate company to lead Adecco, a staffing firm. Beginning Aug. 1, Juergen Steinemann will replace De Maeseneire at Barry Callebaut.
The Govatos family has been churning out Easter sweets, including chocolate baskets and chocolate bunnies, for the Delaware market at its Govatos Chocolate shops for three generations. Easter is the second-biggest candy holiday after Halloween, the NCA notes.
