Oracle's plan to buy Sun Microsystems for about $7.4 billion makes more strategic sense than a Sun-IBM deal would have made, Heidi Moore writes. The deal highlights the value of Sun's successful software assets, including Solaris and Java. What's more, with a Sun-Oracle combo, regulators won't have to raise their eyebrows at consolidation in the server market, in which IBM has 32% and Sun has 10%.
