A new World Health Organization campaign will encourage countries to build and retrofit hospitals so they are capable of withstanding earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters. WHO Director-General Margaret Chan noted that building a hospital to withstand extreme weather and natural disasters adds just 4% to the total cost. "This is a very small amount when you consider the huge investment in a hospital, and the huge investment lost when a hospital collapses," she noted.
