National student assessments begin this week in Australia. Students will be tested on reading, writing and numeracy skills; students in odd-numbered years also will be tested on their abilities in spelling, grammar and punctuation. "The Rudd government is committed to improving outcomes for all Australian children through clear reporting on student and school performance to make sure resources are targeted where they are needed most," said Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard in a statement.
