Liao Honghui, senior business director for China at Wal-Mart, said the company is considering joining the country's booming online marketplace. "China has a large online population, which is still increasing by a fairly big margin each year. Therefore China's e-commerce market has a bright future ahead," Liao said.
After the CEOs of Germany's Metro and Arcandor met Thursday, the companies issued a joint statement saying an alliance of the company's department store divisions might be a sensible course of action. The retailer leaders are planning to meet again, but further details were not disclosed. Arcandor is on a deadline, however, as its credit lines need to be renewed by June 12 or the company might face collapse.
Columnist Lisa Berwin says that although French Connection's FCUK campaign was successful, it might have given the retailer more of a down-market image than was expected. The fashion retailer has re-branded itself a number of times and is working to get back onto consumers' radar. Berwin says menswear will be the biggest challenge for French Connection.
