The Federal Reserve debated at its last meeting the need to increase its purchases of mortgage-backed and government securities to loosen up credit and stimulate growth, according to the meeting's minutes. "Some members noted that a further increase in the total amount of purchases might well be warranted at some point to spur a more rapid pace of recovery," according to meeting minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee.
