A single California fitness center started by Joe Gold more than 40 years ago has grown into a global chain with 600-plus locations. The gyms offer the latest training equipment, plus high-energy exercise classes.
The new Denny's restaurant in Joliet, Ill., is the first in the chain to win Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It was designed to cut energy and water use.
Undeterred by the recession, three entrepreneurs have developed one of the biggest Wireless Zone franchise businesses, opening six Connecticut stores since 2008 with two more slated to open next month. "Franchising as a model is a great way to expand a business," said Alisa Harrison of the International Franchise Association. "In this environment, we've been advocating that now is the time to buy a franchise. It's small business that's creating jobs."
Marriott International has signed deals with developers to open 24 hotels throughout India by 2012. Six are slated to open this year, including five Courtyard-branded hotels and one operating under the Marriott name.
