Three Red Mango frozen-yogurt stores will open in Alabama under a franchise-development agreement with swimming pool contractor David Hurst. The state's first Red Mango will be in Hoover, with Birmingham under consideration for the second store.
Red Mango is seeking three franchisees to open a total of 10 stores in Baltimore. The Dallas-based frozen-yogurt chain has 56 stores and has set a goal of 75 locations in 12 states by the end of the year.
A frozen yogurt topped with fresh fruit from Red Mango or Pinkberry is a healthful, low-fat and low-calorie treat. But choosing a flavor such as Cake Batter from Golden Spoon and topping it with brownies or chocolate-covered raisins will send the calorie count soaring.
Pinkberry and Red Mango, the two companies at the center of the competitive tart frozen-yogurt craze, are starting to show more caution, particularly in the Los Angeles market. More than 250 frozen-yogurt stores exist in the area, and some independent shops have gone out of business.
