South Dakota's congressional delegation criticized the Environmental Protection Agency for considering a rule on indirect uses in determining ethanol's carbon footprint. "By destroying our biofuels industry, the EPA is undoing a great domestic energy achievement by ensuring our energy dependence on hostile regimes," said Sen. John Thune. South Dakota is home to 12 ethanol plants that together produce nearly 1 billion gallons per year.
