Experts estimate it will cost $50 billion to repair the country's seven major urban rail-transit systems, according to a report by the Federal Transit Administration. The rail systems in Chicago, Boston, New York, New Jersey, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., carry 80% of U.S. passengers but rely on aging equipment. The report rated 8% of the rail systems' equipment in poor condition, and another 27% in marginal condition.
