Achim Steiner, the top environmental official for the United Nations, called on chemical companies to contribute to U.N. projects for safer management of chemicals in developing countries and to recommend chemicals that can be phased out. Speaking at the second International Conference on Chemicals Management, Steiner said companies can reduce public-health risks by eliminating inventories of obsolete chemicals, many of which are stockpiled in developing countries that don't have the infrastructure to dispose of them.
