A bankruptcy filing by chemical firm Tronox has led to federal civil charges against its former parent company, Kerr-McGee, and Anadarko Petroleum. U.S. prosecutors and the Environmental Protection Agency allege Kerr-McGee divested itself of Tronox just before its purchase by Anadarko in 2006 in order to avoid paying millions to the government for environmental damage.
