Two recent books capture lost culinary traditions, including the Automats that once were popular lunchtime destinations. One book is "The Food of a Younger Land," a old manuscript of American culinary lore that food writer Mark Kurlansky rediscovered. The other is "Appetite City: A Culinary History of New York," by former New York Times restaurant critic William Grimes.
