Although Russia can meet its goal of increasing its crop production by 50% within 10 to 15 years without the aid of biotechnology, the country still could benefit from adopting the technology in the long term, said John Atkin, chief operating officer of Syngenta. Atkin said the country also could help ease the global food crisis by "reducing barriers to trade" and implementing "selective use of intervention."
