The American Cancer Society said about 650,000 lives were saved during a 15-year decline in the U.S. death rate from cancer. The death rate for men declined 19% between 1990 and 2005, mostly because of fewer colon, lung and prostate cancer cases. Cancer deaths among women dropped 11%, mainly due to decreases in colon and breast cancer.
