A single set of curriculum benchmarks may soon shape what students in 46 states and the District of Columbia learn in public schools, under an agreement between the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. "This is the beginning of a new day for education in our country," said U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. "A lot of hard work is ahead of us. But this is a huge step in a direction that would have been unimaginable just a year or two ago."
