The Federal Aviation Administration is calling on airlines and unions to come up with new recommendations governing pilot rest, setting an "unusually aggressive" deadline of Sept. 1. Current rules date back 50 years, prior to many of the more recent studies on fatigue. The oversight agency also set a July 31 deadline for agreeing on new policies for in-depth background checks on pilots. "Now is the time to push these initiatives forward," said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt.
