A sharp spike in bets on a first-round Wimbledon tennis match prompted U.K. bookmaker Betfair to alert tennis authorities to the unusual activity. Betfair, an online gambling site, received $980,000 in wagers on the match between 109th-ranked Wayne Odesnik and 30th-ranked Jurgen Melzer, compared to less than $163,000 for an average first-round match at the tournament. However, a spokesman for Betfair said the company does not suspect wrongdoing in the Odesnik-Melzer match.
