To help control cash flow, more entrepreneurs are turning to barter. Many trade directly with other business owners, while some 500 barter networks have sprung up to create a currency for more complex trades. One Milwaukee-area music-store owner covers about half his annual ad budget by trading guitars for ad space, and a coffee entrepreneur in the Seattle area says barter pays for about 5% of his total business expenses.
