San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown, Texas, reached more than 99% hand hygiene compliance among staff in late 2008. The hospital worked to improve accessibility of hand hygiene dispensers, adding them to patient rooms, hallways, dietary trays and nursing carts. It also brought in linen hampers for patient rooms to stop the spread of infection when dirty linen is transported and hosted an education fair for staff.
Seniors in Ann Arbor, Mich., who don't have family or friends to take them to medical appointments and procedures get help from Patient Partners, a new program run by Jewish Family Services. Trained volunteers help seniors prepare for an appointment ahead of time and accompany them on the trip. Volunteer Irene Adler, a retired nurse, says there is no better way to use her skills than to comfort and be an advocate for patients.
