Sixteen states and Washington, D.C., now mandate that health insurers offer coverage for autism therapy, and observers say the trend is growing. Even some self-insured employers, who aren't subject to the mandates, are supplying coverage for autism treatments. Legislation has been introduced in the U.S. House and Senate but may be held until the direction of overall health care reform is decided, experts say.
