Through temporary leaves, job sharing and other measures, the UPS pilots union has identified $90 million in savings, helping to delay threatened furloughs for at least 10 months. In a joint statement with the Independent Pilots Association, UPS promised no pilot furloughs before April 1, 2010, and suggested that "voluntary pilot savings generated later this year could eliminate the proposed layoffs entirely." The company says it needs $131 million in savings over three years to avoid furloughs for 300 pilots.
